Living Room Makeover
I wanted to change and update my space, lighten it up. Mary asked a lot of good questions, and she worked with the items I had already bought before her consultation. Afterwards, she gave me a list of things to look for to complete the new design, and then she helped me put everything together. I feel like I’m in a new place every time I walk through the areas we worked on together!
Remodel Planning and Construction Process Consultation
About two years ago, we underwent a large remodel to build our retirement home. We had never worked with a general contractor before and were pretty naive about what to expect, but Mary had helped me with some previous interior design projects, so I contacted her for advice. What I didn’t expect was how invaluable she was with our whole remodel.
She walked us through the entire building process and helped me to understand what to expect from the contractor and subs and how to communicate with people in the industry. She guided us through challenges, providing us information about everything from our gutters to roofing to siding. She was kind, direct at times, which is what we needed while in the middle of a stressful remodel.
Mary also helped with the kitchen and bathroom design; selections for flooring, woodwork, light fixtures, paint colors; and placement of furniture and accessories. Today, I look around and I am so happy with my home; and all the details I would never have had if Mary hadn’t helped us.
Home Preparation for Downsizing
We had the opportunity to move and make some lifestyle choices (like having a lower-maintenance yard), but that meant selling the old home and preparing a new one. Mary really helped us to prioritize and focus. It was all too overwhelming otherwise! We especially appreciated her knowledge of 'tried and true' contractors, because on our own we would not have known where to turn or how to judge quality of bids and reasonableness of quotes. In the end, we had one house that was in shape to put on the market and a new house that was move-in ready.
Newly Purchased Home Makeover
My project was inspired by seeing a house that Mary’s firm HOMEmakers of Oregon had just completed—a total remodel that they put up for sale. It was hands-down the best house we viewed in our price range. It was warm and welcoming. The colors were great, the kitchen was adorable, and the fixtures were just right.
We were too late to buy that one, but we found another house up the street, and I insisted that Mary work her magic on that house, if we were going to buy it. She toured the home with us, reassuring us that the house was in good condition and had great bones.
At first, I had a few doubts about the house turning out the way we wanted, but then Mary got started, and we were off! Mary was so easy to work with. She helped me pick out paint colors, flooring, countertops, light fixtures, etc. We were on a budget and Mary was so great about making sure that our project stayed on task and within our range.
Mary is warm and funny, but also professional. She is very honest about what will work and what won't. She's respectful and doesn't try to steer you away from your own personal taste, but instead figures out a way to go with what you want and make it look fabulous. I really appreciated her talent with colors, textures, and materials.
I can now say that it turned out better than I could have imagined. Our home had that warm and welcoming feel to it when we were done. I think my favorite result was the kitchen. It's where we congregate. She showed me that a few simple changes can make a big difference.
Finish Selections for New Home
When Russ and I decided to sell our house and downsize, our realtor, Morgan Davis, recommended HOMEmakers of Oregon to help us with a few upgrades and remodeling projects to prepare our house to sell. We were very pleased with their work, so after selling our house we contacted Mary and Bob to help us find a house plan to build our future home. After meeting with Mary at her home office and seeing her beautiful home that she had built and decorated, we knew we had chosen the right contractors for building our home.
Mary took the time to listen to our vision for our new home, so she understood our style. She helped us stay on budget and gave us invaluable advice on choosing our appliances, flooring, countertops, fixtures, etc. Even though our home is new, it has the character and charm of an older home, which was our aim. Mary helped us achieve our goal with all the details that make our home so special to us.
After we moved in, Mary also worked with us with the decor. She gave us advice on what type of pictures to hang and where to hang them. She helped us arrange furniture, suggested what we should let go of and what to keep for decorating. She knew how to group our items that complemented the various rooms and spaces. I appreciated Mary's talent for mixing the old with the new to achieve the look we attained.
