What is a repair cafe? It is an all-volunteer event where experts from your community can help you make repairs to small appliances, electronics, bikes, toys, garments, or other items -- and you can learn a lot about repairs along the way. (This Facebook video explains it with a more rock-and-roll vibe.)
Our local group is Repair PDX, and, according to their newsletter, over the past three years they have held 34 repair cafés and fixed over 1,050 items (!). The next Portland-area Fix-It Fair is coming up on January 28:
"January’s Fix-It Fair takes place at George Middle School, 10000 N Burr Ave. Although the Fair’s hours are 9:30 am – 2:30 pm, we’ll be on-hand to fix small appliances and mend garments from 10:30-1:30."
Visit Repair PDX online to learn more, sign up for their e-newsletter, and check out the regional events calendar, which includes fairs in other parts of the metro area. If volunteering more is one of your New Year's resolutions, they have volunteer opportunities, too. Most importantly, pay attention to their What to Expect page.

If you go, we'd love to hear about your experience!
